Interim CFO search
An Interim CFO covers the finance seat for a set period, whether your CFO has left, a sale or raise is coming, or the monthly close has fallen apart. We find available finance executives who have handled your exact situation and can be useful within their first weeks.
The Interim CFO role and its market
An Interim CFO runs the finance function for a defined term and reports to the CEO, with direct access to the audit committee or the PE sponsor. The work depends on why they were brought in. Covering a departure or leave means keeping the close, cash management, payroll, lender reporting and board materials on schedule. Before a sale, raise or IPO, the interim gets financial statements, the quality of earnings work and the data room ready. When the close or reporting is broken, they fix processes, reconcile accounts and rebuild the team's routines. In a restructuring they manage a thirteen-week cash flow forecast and negotiate with lenders, often alongside restructuring advisors. Some interims simply bridge until the permanent CFO arrives, then help onboard them.
Good interim CFOs are easier to find than interim CEOs, yet the right one for your situation is a narrower group. A strong turnaround CFO may be wrong for an IPO readiness project, and an excellent public company CFO may find a lender crisis at a small private company frustrating. Searches go wrong when the company asks for a general interim and then discovers the real need is technical accounting or covenant negotiation. Short assignments also suffer from slow access: if the interim waits two weeks for system logins, files and the auditor's attention, much of the term is lost. We define the main deliverable before shortlisting and ask you to have access ready for day one.
What sets a strong Interim CFO apart
Each of these can be tested in interview or through references before an offer.
- Matched situation experience
- They have handled your specific need before, such as a sale process, covenant reset or broken close, and can describe the deliverable they produced.
- Ready to start
- They are available for the full term, with no overlapping client work that would split their time. Confirm in writing before interviews.
- Fast with unfamiliar systems
- References say they got into the ERP, the chart of accounts and the team's routines quickly. Ask which systems they have used, such as NetSuite, SAP or Sage Intacct.
- Standing with lenders and auditors
- Bank relationship managers, sponsors or audit partners from past assignments confirm they were straightforward and kept commitments.
How we assess Interim CFO candidates
Availability and fit for the specific mandate come first. Before you see a name, we confirm the start date, the length of term the candidate can commit to and whether they have other client work running. Interviews with the CEO, and often the audit committee chair or sponsor operating partner, are structured around your situation: what the interim would deliver by week four and how they would get there. We verify CPA licensure and any other credentials listed. References come from CEOs, sponsors, lenders and auditors on recent assignments, both named by the candidate and found by us.
How Interim CFO engagements are paid
Interim CFOs are usually paid a day rate or monthly rate agreed up front for a defined term, with a notice clause that lets the company end the engagement when a permanent CFO joins. Some engagements add a completion bonus tied to a specific outcome such as a closed sale, refinancing or completed audit. The rate depends on company size, the complexity of the mandate, the time commitment and whether the work is on site. The interim may be hired as a short-term employee or engaged through their own company, which affects benefits, expenses and indemnification. Confirm D&O coverage before they sign filings or lender certificates. The rate, term and any incentive are agreed with you before the search starts.

Hiring an Interim CFO: common questions
How fast can an Interim CFO start?
Candidates on our shortlist are available to begin quickly, often within days to a couple of weeks. The main delays tend to come from the company side: approvals, contracts and system access. Having those ready speeds the first weeks considerably.
Can an Interim CFO sign our financial statements and filings?
If formally appointed as an officer, an interim CFO can sign management representation letters, lender certificates and, at public companies, SEC certifications. Many are careful about taking on that responsibility and will want to understand the controls first. Discuss this with counsel and confirm D&O coverage before appointment.
How long does the search and the assignment take?
Placing an interim CFO usually takes days to a few weeks, depending on how specific the need is. Assignments commonly last a few months, or longer for a sale or restructuring. A permanent CFO search run alongside typically takes a few months, depending on the role, market and confidentiality.
Should we hire the interim permanently?
Some interim CFOs take permanent roles, and an assignment can work as a trial for both sides. Many prefer project work and will say so at the start. We ask each candidate about this upfront so the board is not surprised later.
